Sundial on plinth at Mull of Galloway Lighthouse

Many lighthouses – particularly those designed and built by Stevenson – used to have a sundial somewhere in the lighthouse grounds. The lighthouse at the Mull of Galloway was no different but the plinth holding the sundial has been empty for many a year. However – it is empty no longer! A new sundial has been fitted (suitably calibrated to be in the correct position) and the plinth repainted in the colours of the Northern Lighthouse Board.

Not that it’s really necessary for telling the time – after all, you could almost use the shadow of the lighthouse itself as a sort of crude sundial – but it’s an appropriate addition to this beautiful site.
